Southern California Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf

Catastrophic Need Fund

Description:
There are times and circumstances when either earning enough money to pay for the basics has become a challenge or exorbitant expenses infringe on our budget. Catastrophic events in our life are difficult enough to deal with even when we do have enough funds to handle the expenses that come our way.

Over the years, SCRID has seen several of our own interpreters come upon hard times. Some from accidents, some from illness, but all catastrophic financially. It is especially difficult for freelance interpreters, whether part-time or full-time, who typically do not receive sick pay or worker’s compensation benefits.

In order to address these unfortunate and unforeseeable situations and to be able to assist SCRID members in need in some small measure, SCRID has established a fund whereby interpreters in serious need may request and receive, as available, financial assistance. This fund is accessible via SCRID’s website. It is open ongoing and allows for either general donations which will accrue until such time as they are needed and approved for use, or specific donations being solicited by SCRID on behalf of a particular colleague in need at the time.

Of course, all donations are tax free as SCRID operates as a non-profit organization, but the ability to assist our fellow interpreters who might be going through a rough time is invaluable.

Stewardship:
SCRID Vice-President shall oversee the Catastrophic Need Fund and all its operations. The Vice-President shall call upon the MALs to assist in application screening, and the PR committee to assist in fundraising efforts.

Application Process:
Once an application is received, within two weeks, a confidential committee will notify the applicant of approval status. Upon application approval, a two-week focused campaign will be initiated to raise funds for the account. The recipient will be given the full amount of specific donations raised within the two week period. Should specifically donated funds total less than $1,000, funds generally donated to the Catastrophic Need fund will be made available. Such funds shall not exceed 10% of fund total or $300, whichever is lesser. Funds will be dispersed to the recipient within four weeks of application submission.

Application Criteria:

  • Experiencing a catastrophic event that places extreme financial burden on the interpreter, either due to time unable to work or the addition of exorbitant expenses such as personal medical bills or rebuilding after a natural disaster.
  • Active member of the interpreting profession living and working within SCRID boundaries.
  • Member of SCRID for a minimum of 6 months prior to application.
