Independent Study CEUs

Description

Participants should plan an Independent Study with input from and in consultation with the Sponsor. The Sponsor must review, approve and monitor any Independent Study project. Examples of successful Independent Study include research, curriculum development or enhancement projects, study groups, developing effective mentoring strategies or evaluation rubric or the preparation of scientific/clinical materials for publication. NOTE: Participants must apply for and receive approval from a Sponsor prior to the commencement of the activity.

NOTES:

  • IS credits are not approved for study that is a part of routine employment responsibilities. 
  • DO NOT begin IS work prior to sponsor approval - this time may not be included in your CEU count. Advance notice of 21 days prior to your tentative start date is requested for plan development.
  • Your project must be completed within twelve months from the date of approval.
  • This product affords you with up to 2 RID CEUs (20 hours min), as capped by the RID for each individual IS Plan.


Process


Not less than 21 days prior to beginning your Independent Study:

  1. Please provide information for your activity by submitting SCRID’s IS Request Form. Upon submission you will be emailed a copy of your response, with a link you may use to return and add additional information, before and after the activity. Keep this email for further use. Independent Study Plans are designed and approved by the interpreter and sponsor in collaboration. 
    1. You will be requested to provide specific and measurable activity goals and a tentative activity plan with your initial submission of the IS Request Form. Keep in mind that the Independent Study (IS) will require you to answer questions such as What and Why you want to do the activity? What are your specific goals? How will you accomplish these goals? How will you show what you have learned?  How much time will the activity involve?  Click here for Bloom's Taxonomy a list of measurable verbs. These types are verbs are needed when explaining your specific goals.
  2. Upon receipt of this form, the SCRID CMP will contact you to further explore your request. If accepted, the CMP will instruct you to submit payment for Independent Study sponsorship by clicking on the item shown at the bottom of this page. If you are a SCRID or RID Region V Affiliate Chapter member, the cost of each activity is $25.00 per activity. You must be logged into your SCRID account to receive the member benefit. If you are not a member, the cost is $50.00 per activity. This payment is non-refundable. Payment must be received before paperwork processing can begin.
  3. Following receipt of payment, you will work with the SCRID CMP to develop and finalize your Independent Study Plan. Once the IS Plan is approved you will be given the go ahead to begin your study.

During your Independent Study:

  1. Independent Study Plan Logs: Logging your time and activities is crucial in completing a successful IS activity. Keep a detailed log as you go, and be very clear on the type of activity used during your study time, as this is what helps to determine the ratio for time spent:CEUs earned. Activities that require you to design or explore resources typically earn a 1:0.5 ratio (1hr = .05CEUs), while those curated to present and utilize salient information only typically earn a 1:1 ratio (1hr = .1CEU). Activities such as researching resources, for example, earn 0.05 CEUs for 1 hour, while direct engagement with the tutor, recording and assessing personal work samples, or direct interpreting practice with a partner would be approved at .1 CEU for 1 hour.
    1. Total CEUs earned on the project will be determined by the CMP Sponsor. Estimated total CEUs and content areas will be determined together in advance of the study, and reviewed by the Sponsor for adjustments as needed prior to submitting credits to the RID.
  2. Complete all additional requirements delineated within your IS Plan.

Upon completion of your Independent Study:

Once you have completed your independent study activities, return to the link within your original request confirmation email to upload final documents. The Sponsor will review information for completeness, and to ensure they collectively meet the standards and goals agreed upon in your IS Plan. In addition, the number of CEUs and content areas will be re-evaluated and updated if necessary. Once the review process has been completed, the Sponsor will submit credits to the RID. Please allow up to two weeks post final submission for CEUs to be processed.


Housekeeping

RID forms and procedures are subject to change without notice. SCRID's procedures will change to reflect RID requirements.

SCRID is audited by RID to determine if RID’s procedures/guidelines are adhered to for approving workshops/events.  Failure to pass the audit would result in SCRID losing sponsorship status.  We ask you to keep this in mind as we work together to gather information for sponsorship.

You will automatically be sent a copy of your form submissions. Please preserve copies of all submitted documents and information for your records.
